State of AI Report 2018

AI: Hype or Substance

Artificial intelligence is hailed as the next major technology disruptor, providing enterprises with new capabilities and revenue streams. But how much is hype versus actual implementation?

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies enable computers to perform tasks that human beings have traditionally been better at doing than machines are. In recent years, AI has advanced rapidly, and enterprises are becoming very interested in the technology, particularly predictive analytics, machine learning, and other types of AI that allow them to extract insights from big data. However, most organizations haven’t deployed these systems into production yet, and it will take time to see the full impact of AI on enterprises.

  • About two-thirds of companies are either working on AI projects or evaluating the technology, but only 12% are currently using AI in production.
  • 49% of respondents plan to increase their AI spending in 2018; only 6% are decreasing their spending.
  • Enterprises are very interested in predictive analytics and machine learning but less interested in cognitive systems, recommendation engines, and chatbots.
  • Lack of IT infrastructure, talent, and budget are holding companies back from investing in AI.
  • Those that are investing are buying decision management systems and machine learning platforms.
