Private Clouds: Powerful Convergence or False Promise?
IT leaders rightfully debate how extensively they should embrace cloud computing techniques inside their data centers, and what kind of benefits they’ll get. But make no mistake: Private clouds do offer a new and powerful data center strategy.
In our survey of 504 business technology professionals, more than half are either using private clouds (28%) or planning to do so (30%). However, while there are key technology components, it isn’t a specific technology. A private cloud is not a shiny toy that an enterprise buys. Instead, cloud computing is a new paradigm for delivering IT services. The ability to commoditize IT hardware and software in a private cloud and provide economies of scale with on demand capacity to the enterprise involves new technology, but more broadly focuses on standards and process.
